Event Details

  • Curating content online is a new way of making the most out of your and other people's use of social media tools.

  • Make your Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook accounts work harder for your organisation.

  • A practical half-day course for charities and small businesses on achieving more with social media.

Your charity or company can't always publish the best stories, pictures, videos or tweets about your work. Quite often you find that other people - supporters, clients, or professionals like journalists - create far better content about you and what you do.

But you don't have to do it all yourself: you can curate the best of the content you find from other people, and present it on your website or blog.

And all without stealing or abusing their copyright of course.

It makes you and your organisation look good, an industry expert, a key source of relevant, informed knowledge. You might even be able to build up an online community around your curated content.

Curating is the skill of finding, selecting and presenting content from a wide range of publishers, and sharing it with your supporters, clients or the public.

In a half-day course Howard Lake will give you practical advice, ideas and tools on how to do this to help transform your website or blog.

If you want, bring your own laptop and you'll be able to try out some of the tools and techniques.

What would you curate?

  • Pictures and tweets about your product or fundraising appeal
  • A breaking news story
  • Blog posts about your campaign or product
  • Tweets and videos from your annual conference, or another event
  • Quotes from celebs
  • Feedback on Twitter from satisfied customers or donors

What content can you use?

  • Tweets
  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Links to web pages
  • Audio
  • Blog posts
  • Bookmarks to useful web pages
  • and much more.

What you will learn

  • After running through the benefits (and responsibilities and risks) of using other people's content, we'll look at the different types and locations of content (video, photos, sound, links etc) and the better places to find them.

  • How you might use them e.g. to support a sales campaign, a fundraising appeal, an event, a breaking news story, press coverage, blogger comments, positive feedback.

  • Are there already people acting as curators for your organisation? Can you collaborate with them?

  • Practical activities: try out some tools and build some curated content about your organisation.

  • How you can make curation easier e.g. encouraging supporters and clients to use specific tags, hashtags etc.

  • Delegates will end the session having created one or more elements of curated content, and have the knowledge and confidence to create and manage more.
